THE TIP by WILLIAM A. PHELON

First Line: THE EAGER TOUT, WHILE PROWLING FOR THE NEWS
Last Line: THAT WRETCHED ANIMAL IS RUNNING YET!
Subject(s): GAMBLING; HORSE RACING; WAGERING; BETTING;

THE eager tout, while prowling for the news,
First heard it from the wop shined his shoes—
The wop had heard it from a youth who heard
A real wise cracker got it from a girl
Who knew another flapper—name of Pearl—
Whose second cousin knew a rail-bird well,
A bird who did not hesitate to tell
Just how it happened that he really got
The inside information, boiling hot,
From a side-partner of a riding ace,
Who knew a sure thing in the second race!
And thus the tip spread flaming through the town,
Till every fish had planked his money down.
Oh, gorgeous tip, and rich alluring bet—
That wretched animal is running yet!
