HERE IS MUSIC: 13. VILLANELLE by AUSTIN PHILIPS

First Line: WHEN SHALL I DARE, ONCE MORE, TO FEAST MY EYES
Last Line: LOOK FULL ON YOURS ... AND LOVE WITHOUT DISGUISE?
Subject(s): LOVE;

WHEN shall I dare, once more, to feast my eyes—
Windows of my wrung soul—and thus, again
Look full on Yours ... and love without disguise?

Last time I talked with You 'twas otherwise.
Ten thousand inhibitions made Life vain. ...
When shall I dare, once more, to feast my eyes,

Know that no serpent, subtle to surmise
My secret, sees me, hungry, fasting, fain,
Look full on Yours, and love without disguise?

I made my face a mask, a mass of lies,
Home of Hypocrisy, abhorr'd Chicane. ...
When shall I dare, once more, to feast my eyes,

Fearless, on Your blest beauty, search, surprise
Your secret heart's core, worship without pain,
Look full on Yours ... and love without disguise?

Till that fond moment my baned being dies,
Not lives: nor respite comes, surcease from strain. ...
When shall I dare, once more, to feast my eyes,
Look full on Yours ... and love without disguise?
