I

NIGHT on her couch of the mountains
And the poignant gleam of a star,
Dawn in a place full of shadowy pines
And mist in a valley afar.

II

Snow in a twilight of winter
And frost in the heart of a stream,
Cold of the moon on monotonous sands
And voices out of a dream.

III

Dower of dew at evenfall
And the ghosts of melodies fled,
Prayer in the heart of a man that is mazed
For the love of a child that is dead.
