BITTER RUE by GRACE BROWN PUTNAM

First Line: THEIR LOVE THAT WAS SO EXIGENT
Last Line: MAY WITHER ALL LIFE'S PASSION FLOWERS.
Subject(s): LOVE - LOSS OF; PAST;

Their love that was so exigent,
Its beauty gone, its perfume spent,
Lies in the discard of the years,
A shabby thing, too drab for tears;

Time plucked its petals one by one
To leave them wilting in the sun;
And thus a few ironic hours
May wither all life's passion flowers.
