BLACK APRIL by GRACE BROWN PUTNAM

First Line: COULD GOD HAVE MEANT THE SPRING TO HURT US SO
Last Line: JUST ONE BLACK NIGHT OF AGONY?
Subject(s): APRIL; DEPRESSION, MENTAL; GRIEF; SPRING; MENTALLY DEPRESSED; MENTAL DISTRESS; SORROW; SADNESS;

Could God have meant the spring to hurt us so
That wounds should ache when south winds blow?
Must sweeter air and sun-warmed rain
Bring back once more an ancient pain?
And purple clouds that brood and drift
Mean but a stab of anguish swift?
Must sky-lines flowing free and far
Revive the sting beneath a scar?
And robin's song now hold a note
That clutches at a parching throat?
COULD God have MEANT the spring to be
Just one black night of agony?
