ON SIR ROBERT COTTON, THE ANTIQUARY by THOMAS RANDOLPH

Poet Analysis

First Line: POSTERITY HATH MANY FATES BEMOAN'D
Last Line: WHO NE'ER HAD VANQUISH'D ALL THINGS BUT IN THEE.
Subject(s): COTTON, SIR ROBERT BRUCE (1561-1631);

POSTERITY hath many fates bemoan'd,
But ages long since past for thee have groan'd.
Time's trophies thou didst rescue from the grave,
Who in thy death a second burial have.
Cotton, death's conquest now complete I see,
Who ne'er had vanquish'd all things but in thee.
