APATHY by ELEANORE E. REED

First Line: THE FUTURE'S CAUTIOUS CURTAIN DREW ASIDE
Last Line: AND THAT TO ME IS ULTIMATE DESPAIR.
Subject(s): APATHY;

The Future's cautious curtain drew aside
And, like one viewing from afar
An unexpected vista through a wood,
I saw the days that were to come untried
And all the bareness of my soul beside.

The years had altered me. I was not fair,
But while accepting this in faith,
I quailed and wept against what more I saw,
The days ahead a bitter sameness share,
And that to me is ultimate despair.
