PERHAPS by AVERELL WOODRUFF REYNOLDS

First Line: PERHAPS THERE IS A SEASON OR A SPACE
Last Line: BE REAL AS ALL OUR PARTING SORROWS SEEM.

Perhaps there is a season or a space --
From which all cruel corrosive souls are barred;
Where we, alone, may thought by thought replace --
Each old experience that has been marred.
As season follows season in the land,
And each pursues his flickering elf light,
May we with all our blundering understand
Each impulse we have followed in our flight;
And when our paths cross in the coming years,
Be it by chance or by our own intent,
May we have put an end to all our fears
In all the crowded years that we have spent;
And may the wonder of this future dream
Be real as all our parting sorrows seem.
