DEAN SWIFT by BENJAMIN ROSENBAUM

First Line: THERE WAS A TERRIBLENESS ABOUT THE MAN
Last Line: AND HIS EYES HAD A BLAZE OF LIGHT!
Subject(s): SWIFT, JONATHAN (1667-1745);

THERE was a terribleness about the man
Like the ocean torn by a storm;
And a tenderness --
Purple dusk kissing the hills.

He was bitter -- humanly bitter in an ugly age
But there were times -- O find them! Find them! --
When his arms had a giant's hugeness
And his eyes had a blaze of light!
