A RIBBON IN MY HAIR by BELLE RUSH

First Line: I THOUGHT THAT HOPE WAS DEAD; THAT LIFE WOULD BE
Last Line: I STAYED TO TWINE A RIBBON IN MY HAIR.
Subject(s): HOPE; OPTIMISM;

I thought that hope was dead; that life would be
A mere existence, dull montony.
That living without you I should not care
How drab I looked, or if none thought me fair.
But yesterday I saw redbud in bloom,
A pale Sweet William nodding at my feet;
I caught a whiff of the wild plum's perfume,
And suddenly I knew that life was sweet.
And so, before I went down to the gate,
To dream of you, who will no more be there,
Although I knew that it was getting late,
I stayed to twine a ribbon in my hair.
