A LIFE by MARGARET SACKVILLE

First Line: HE WOKE IN SPRING, WHEN APRIL WINDS BLEW COLD
Last Line: HIS LIFE, WHICH APRIL FIRST HAD CHILLED—AND DIED.
Subject(s): LIFE;

HE woke in Spring, when April winds blew cold
And froze through hours of shivering green and gold.

So dared not wholly trust, when Summer came,
Her radiant days of momentary flame;

But found in Autumn peace—whose promises
Were better kept.
When Winter stripped the trees
And blurred the sun, he gladly laid aside
His life, which April first had chilled—and died.
