A MID SONG FOR SPRING by YORK SAMPSON

First Line: EARLY COME THE PASQUE FLOWERS
Last Line: WHEN THE WINTER'S LONG!
Subject(s): NATURE; SEASONS; SPRING; WINTER;

Early come the pasque flowers,
Early come the rains,
Winter was a dusty one—
No snow on the plains.

We who love the cold's thrust
And the ice and snow,
Almost left our prairie homes
For we missed it so.

We who thrill to lashing sting
Of the winter gales,
Missed the crisp, crunching call
Of the frozen trails.

Early come the lilac buds
And the robin's song;
But not half as welcome as
When the Winter's long!
