SOUTH DAKOTA by YORK SAMPSON

First Line: GREAT RIVERS OF LAND
Last Line: PINCHING CRAW OF YELLOW LODE.
Subject(s): SOUTH DAKOTA;

I.

Great rivers of land ...
Corn swishing in sun. ...
Stock on the flat green. ...
Trees and streams together. ...
Some self-conscious cities.

II.

Waste, waste, waste. ...
Sandy husks of past eons. ...
Catacombs of prairie dogs. ...
Banners in the western sky.

III.

Ragged thrones for beauty;
Pines and sons of pines;
Speckled flash in streams.
New life under old stars;
Pinching craw of yellow lode.
