A PURPLE HEART BADGE by EMMA THOMAS SCOVILLE

First Line: A SOLDIER'S EMBLEM LOST FOR MANY A YEAR
Last Line: WHO EARNED THIS MILITARY BADGE OF FAME?
Subject(s): HERO AND LEANDER; HONOR; MILITARY; SOLDIERS; VICTORY;

A soldier's emblem lost for many a year
Was found beneath a dusty, rubbish pile;
Mute witness to a hero's station here,
Who proudly wore the symbol for awhile.
On dark blue homespun coat, now in decay,
Was finely sewn this honor token: old
Despoiled—its purple heart a sodden gray—
Forgotten badge, time-eaten, prey to mold!

Some valiant soldier met a dangerous foe,
Courageously he volunteered his life;
His daring deed—who would not like to know:
What victory was won through mortal strife?
What record holds this gallant soldier's name
Who earned this military badge of fame?
