As Time's sure pendulum swings to and fro, The years tick in, tick out, some bright, some grey, Persistently in space. What rhythms convey The message borne through Nature's constant flow? The silent throb of years ... clean winds that blow ... Soft canticle of stars so far away ... Sad moaning of the sea through night and day "Eternity," by song or sigh breathed low. Across the plains we hear its whispered song; It pulses with the desert's vibrant heat; We hear it in the mountain's smothered sigh; Illusively it comes, now faint now strong, Forever on the universe to beat "Eternity," in muffled song or cry. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WHAT THING A BIRD WOULD LOVE by ROBERT FROST LEFT-HANDED POEM by JAMES GALVIN I'M GOING BACK TO SOMETHING by DAVID IGNATOW AGING TOGETHER by CLARENCE MAJOR CONSECRATED GROUND; READ AT THE NEW YORK CITY HALL by EDWIN MARKHAM SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: BARNEY HAINSFEATHER by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
