THE GYPSY CALL by EMMA THOMAS SCOVILLE

First Line: YOU WONDER WHY I CHOSE THIS GOWN
Last Line: WILL ROAM THE FIELDS IN GYPSY GOWN.
Subject(s): GYPSIES; WANDERING & WANDERERS; GIPSIES;

You wonder why I chose this gown,
This flowery, crimson-flaming thing?—
I am a gypsy vagabond
In country fields where robins sing!

I locked dull care behind strong bars
To live these glowing dreams of mine;
Then chose this crimson, gypsy dress
And hung my plain one on the line.

I left the hard, swift road folks go,
For soft, lush grass beneath my feet;
And climbing up a sun-drenched hill
I found wild berries ripe and sweet.

Beyond the measured tick of clock,
The clean winds sweep the fields and sky,
My heart beats fast with life's red wine—
And wonderingly you question why?

Tomorrow in a four-walled space
I'll heed Time's tick, in somber brown ...
But all day long the @3I@1 that dreams,
Will roam the fields in gypsy gown.
