THE VAGABOND by EMMA THOMAS SCOVILLE

First Line: I HEARD BEAUTY IN THE WOODS
Last Line: . . . . . . . . . . . . . WELL—PERHAPS!
Subject(s): GYPSIES; WANDERING & WANDERERS; GIPSIES;

I heard Beauty in the woods,
Sing two notes and then a trill;
But she hid among the trees
When I looked with heart athrill—
You say, it was a wild bird's song?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . Well—perhaps!

Beauty beckoned with a smile,
Bowed and swayed in ecstasy,
Flaming-yellow up a hill
In a soundless symphony—
You say, it was the daffodils?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . Well—perhaps!

Beauty caught me in her arms,
Kissed my cheeks, and brushed my hair,
Though I felt her presence near—
Could not find her anywhere—
You say, it was the morning breeze?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . Well—perhaps!

I have often wondered why
Beauty bade me drop my load,
Take my staff and follow her
Down a little winding road—
You say, it is my Gypsy blood?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . Well—perhaps!
