LONELY CABIN by JOHN A. SIMPSON

First Line: SOME SAY THE CABIN FELL ALMOST APART
Last Line: AFTER SHE FOUND HER SON.
Subject(s): DEATH - CHILDREN; DESPAIR; MOTHERS & SONS; MURDER; DEATH - BABIES;

Some say the cabin fell almost apart
The night the mother found her son,
The night she broke her heart.

It was a lonely cabin where the deed was done,
Bleak and black and homely on the height.
And whether what took place occurred before set of sun,
None ever knew, or darkly in the night.

But since that night the cabin, shaken,
Falls always more apart,
From it the life (as from the human) taken,
The night the mother broke her heart.

Most children cry when they are carried near it;
Some say that dogs howl sore.
Stout hearted men are heard to say they fear it
When the full moon is o'er.

For the full moon was shining
Where they slew him
(Its beams fell on the ghastly floor).
She had a premonition, so she knew him
Through the half opened door.

She's buried now upon the mountain shoulder,
The cabin falling more and more apart.
Her hair turned white, her face a life time older,
The night she broke her heart.

But if she knew the reason for the wild
Mad deed, she told no one.
She tasted food at times, but never smiled,
After she found her son.
