AUGUST NIGHT by SARAH MIDDLETON SIMPSON

First Line: WHOEVER ONCE HAS LAIN
Last Line: HE WILL NEVER FEAR TO DIE.
Subject(s): NIGHT; BEDTIME;

Whoever once has lain
Through all an August night
Upon the warm brown earth
When no moon spreads a light
On fields that have been seared
By blazing sun all day
And darkness gives to them
The stars and Milky Way --
Whoever once has loved
The hard caress of grass
Upon his outflung arm
And watched great Cygnus pass
Above his wondering eyes --

He will never fear to lie
Throughout the longer night.
He will never fear to die.
