Water in hole and trench On the earth's wide crust, Is water enough to quench Thirst or lay dust, But, oh -- the river and lake Under house and hill, Source of the springs that break Forth, cool, still! Slow are those rivers and dark. They curve and meet and spread, Leaving no mark For searchers overhead. Deep in bedrock, they Flow as all streams flow Into gulf and bay. There's little that we know Of river-mouth and creek Far down under A cliff where seas break And leap and thunder. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SUNSET by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON THE POET SPEAKS by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON THE SUICIDE by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON IF HE SHOULD COME by EDWIN MARKHAM THE COMING OF WAR: ACTAEON by EZRA POUND THE ALTAR by EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON ELEGY: THE LAMENT OF EDWARD BLASTOCK; FOR RICHARD ROWLEY by EDITH SITWELL |
