A WOMAN-GROWN by VIRGINIA STAIT

First Line: IN GRIEF I WOULD HAVE CRIED OUT YESTERDAY
Last Line: A WOMAN -- GROWN. PERHAPS A WOMAN OLD!
Subject(s): AGING; GROWTH; OLD AGE; WOMEN;

In grief I would have cried out yesterday,
At cruel words, sword-points for my bare feet;
I would have questioned with no thought's delay,
With childish eyes and lips that must entreat!

But this new hour -- I bandage every bruise,
I put on sandals -- and I am not told --
There is so much to win and all to lose --
A woman -- grown. Perhaps a woman old!
