SPOKEN TO AN OWL by FRANK THIBAULT

First Line: DAWN WAKES THE DAY THAT QUEERLY FORMS YOUR NIGHT
Last Line: WHEN QUESTIONED BY MY FRIENDS, WINK MUTE REPLIES!
Subject(s): BIRDS; OWLS;

Dawn wakes the day that queerly forms your night,
Strange bird. Now pray explain why you were caught
In my hen-coop, by dawn -- the pink delight?
Please tell me, Wisdom Eyes, just what you sought?
You wink and shake your drowsy head at me,
Seem to forget I trapped you, fugitive
Of light, that I can cage or set you free.
Another wink! You know that I will give
You liberty. It seems as if you know
That I am of your kind: that I a man,
Am owl more than a man; that my thoughts glow
Bright in the starlit night's slow caravan
Of dreams; that I, like you, O Wisdom Eyes,
When questioned by my friends, wink mute replies!
