THE GIFT by AMELIA WOODWARD TRUESDELL

First Line: BECAUSE I CANNOT SPEAK THE WORD
Last Line: DEAF EARS ACCURSED AND BLINDED EYES!
Subject(s): GOD; RELIGION; THEOLOGY;

Because I cannot speak the word
The greatest human lips have known;
Because my ear may not have heard
The mightiest of God's thunder-tone;

Because I could not probe the heart
To depths which God alone should see,
I have despised the humbler part
With which the Master trusted me.

O bastard gifts of unknown birth!
O soul that cannot read the skies!
A vaunt thy offerings, little worth!
Deaf ears accursed and blinded eyes!
