THE MESS OF IT by AMELIA WOODWARD TRUESDELL

First Line: THE GODS MADE A SORRY OLD MESS OF IT
Last Line: BUT LEFT MAN TO ADD LOVE AS THE TEST OF THE TRUTH.
Subject(s): LOVE; YOUTH;

The gods made a sorry old mess of it—
The results we can't even guess of it—
When the caldron they mixed for the young world's youth;
The joy and the sorrow they cast indiscriminate,
The false from the true they did not eliminate,
But left man to add love as the test of the truth.
