OCTAVES IN A GARDEN: 1. WADHAM by ARTHUR W. UPSON

First Line: THE DAY IS LIKE A SABBATH IN A SWOON
Last Line: THE OLD QUADRANGLE PAVED WITH AFTERNOON.
Subject(s): OXFORD, ENGLAND; SABBATH; SUNDAY;

WADHAM

THE day is like a Sabbath in a swoon.
Slow in September's blue go fair cloud-things
Poising aslant upon their charmed wings,
Arrested by some backward thought of June.
Softly I tread, and with repentant shoon,
Half fearfully in sweet imaginings,
Where broods, like courtyards of departed kings,
The old quadrangle paved with afternoon.
