YOSHIWARA by LOUISE VANDERPOOL

First Line: BEFORE A THIRTEENTH YEAR WAS OLD
Last Line: BEHIND A SCREEN OF HO HO BIRDS.
Subject(s): JAPAN; PROSTITUTION; JAPANESE; HARLOTS; WHORES; BROTHELS;

Before a thirteenth year was old,
Her ivory body had been sold.

There were none to heed the cry
Of a quivering butterfly.

Tender heart beats counted twice
In the final sacrifice.

Tears express forbidden words
Behind a screen of Ho Ho birds.
