A BASSWOOD TREE by ROBERT SPARKS WALKER

First Line: PAWNBROKER TREE
Last Line: AND PAWN A NOTE FOR FOOD.
Subject(s): BASSWOOD TREES;

(@3Note: The Basswood suspends its small round seeds on
Slender, wirelike stems, often in groups of three, resembling
a pawnbroker's sign.@1)

Pawnbroker tree
Among the forest folk,
Suspend your small
Seedballs, your triple brood,
Above your door,
That hungry birds when broke,
May fly inside
And pawn a note for food.
