AGERATUM by HELEN FIELD WATSON

First Line: WE TWO SOWED THIS AGERATUM
Last Line: YOU—HAVE GONE!
Subject(s): DEATH; GRIEF; OLD AGE; DEAD, THE; SORROW; SADNESS;

We two sowed this ageratum—
You and I—
In our pretty garden where
Catbirds sang a varied air.
Sunshine crowned your silver hair,
Just last spring!

We transplanted ageratum—
You and I—
To our sunny border-bed.
At the pool the grosbeak's red
Matched the roses overhead,
Just last June!

I selected ageratum
For you, dear;
Took it to your fever-bed,
There a prayer and greeting said;
Laughed, but went with heart of lead,
Yesterday!

Now, I cut blue ageratum—
Calm with grief.—
With it creamy tulle I plait
For the door to indicate
That your body lies in state.
You—have gone!
