INTIMATE GOD by HELEN FIELD WATSON

First Line: YESTERDAY HE SEEMED QUITE DISTANT
Last Line: SING THEIR MEASURED MELODY.
Subject(s): GOD; RELIGION; THEOLOGY;

Yesterday He seemed quite distant,
Unresponsive, harsh, austere;
Obviously a God of power,
But a Power man must fear.

For I first beheld the mountains—
Massive peaks and unclothed spires—
Picturesque yet terrifying,
Silent, lit with sunset fires.

But tonight Your eyes are on me,
And Your firm hand strokes my hair,
And Your low sweet voice beside me
Calls me—calls from everywhere.

For the friendly stars are shining
And the wind blows strong and free.
Crickets in the tall, dried grasses
Sing their measured melody.
