LACKING TALENTS by HELEN FIELD WATSON

First Line: I WANT TO BE A SUPPLEMENT OF OTHER LIVES
Last Line: TO HELP COMPLETE THE DAY—A NEEDED SUPPLEMENT.
Subject(s): SYMPATHY; EMPATHY;

I want to be a supplement of other lives;
A smaller or a larger angle as they need;
To fill the given space and make their day complete;
To sing if singing helps; to be the silent one
If others want to sing; to talk if that is best;
To wait and listen if another needs to tell
His burden or his joy; to work if I should work,
But not to take the task from someone's weaker hands
And let him know the crushing pangs of uselessness;
To sympathize if that will cover loneliness;
To ask for sympathy if giving gives him strength;
To help complete the day—a needed supplement.
