ON THE GARDEN WALL by HELEN FIELD WATSON

First Line: SOMETIMES SHADOWS SEEM TO ME
Last Line: BETTER THAN REALITY.
Subject(s): REALITY; SHADOWS;

Sometimes shadows seem to me
Lovely as reality,
Lacking bounds, yet well-defined,
Calling deeper thoughts to mind.

Now the phantom elm-twig's fall
Slanting on my garden wall.
Two dimensions I can see
Much more clearly than the three.

Just as dainty as the real,
Softer than the things we feel,
Often shadows seem to me
Better than reality.
