LIFE by TESSA SWEAZY WEBB

First Line: THIS, THEN, IS LIFE ... OF SUCH OUR DREAMS ARE MADE
Last Line: OUR DREAMS ARE VAIN, NO DOUBT, BUT EXQUISITE.

This, then, is life . . . of such our dreams are made,
Eternal reaching out toward some strange land,
To seize the fragile joys with eager hand --
The brief, elusive joys that had betrayed
Our questing mind. Through dawnings unafraid,
We seek the power that makes a grain of sand,
Or whirls a star in space at its command,
And find no answer, but are undismayed.

We follow silhouettes: a shadow blur
Upon a cloud; the quiet stabbed by thunder;
A rainbow bridging space and lovelier
Than any man-made citadel of wonder.
And while we travel onward, bit by bit,
Our dreams are vain, no doubt, but exquisite.
