EUROPE IS HUNGRY by FRANK WILMOT

First Line: TIS EASIER TO BE JUST THAN GENEROUS
Last Line: AND THANK THE GODS FOR THESE GRIM LESSONS LEARNED.
Subject(s): HUNGER; WORLD WAR I; FIRST WORLD WAR;

'TIS easier to be just than generous,
'Tis easier to be cruel than be kind;
And now we tremble at point perilous;
The lusts of conquest or the power of mind?
There were heart-poisonings and spirit-frosts,
There were deep crimes and boasts, but that's all done;
How could the nations know what boasting costs?
Why should these millions suffer for the one?
Though thoughtless peoples gave their hearts and bled
For lies of leaders and the lusts of sway,
From murky smokes of towns and bodies dead
A whiter flame shall burst and bring the Day,
If men attune their hearts to faiths long spurned,
And thank the gods for these grim lessons learned.
