THE YOUNG POET by FRANK WILMOT

First Line: THAT I MIGHT STIR THESE MEN
Last Line: FOR, OH! I WAS AFRAID!
Subject(s): POETRY & POETS;

THAT I might stir these men
Once, in my youth, I prayed;
My prayer was answered, then,
And, oh! I was afraid!

For through still souls there broke
An ocean's surge and swing,
Tremendous flames awoke
To my poor ballading.

And from men's cries and blows
The moving mask of change
Crept over all these shows
Like a great cloud and strange.

I gazed on all the wrack,
Worlds fashioned and unmade --
I wanted my prayer back,
For, oh! I was afraid!
