AD ASTRA: 93 by CHARLES WHITWORTH WYNNE

First Line: LIKE CHILDREN, SEIZING FIRST THE GLITTERING BAIT
Last Line: THAT THEY MIGHT LEARN THROUGH SUFFERING WHENCE THEY SPRUNG.
Subject(s): IDOLS;

Like children, seizing first the glittering bait,—
They snatch'd at Pleasure with its lurid plea,
Choosing the certain death that doth await
All who give rein to sensual vanity.
Till, wearied out with their Idolatry,
God scatter'd them the heathen host among,
That they might learn through suffering whence they sprung.
