Sir Eliduc hath ta'en the maid aside,
And told her of the grief that him bestead.
The call of Honour might not be denied,
Tho' sore the severance, deep the parting dread.
Still manfully must he that pang abide.
And she, who wist not yet that he was wed
And fain had kept him near her evermore,
Against his breast her burden'd plaint did pour—
