SONNET, by DOROTHY MOORE GARRISON First Line: The autumn loitered through the valley lanes Last Line: And all our summer sowing had been lost. Subject(s): Winter | ||||||||
The autumn loitered through the valley lanes, Along the foothills where the lichens grow Pale green across the rocks. The rivers flow Ice-free, swelled by the season's early rains. And on the rocky slopes above the plains, The clustered aspen trees were set a-glow; But winter grips the earth before we know. We lost our chance to garner summer gains. Within the space of sunset and a dawn, The winter came upon us iron-shod, Blackened the gardens with a killing frost. We had delayed too long. The mild days gone, Earth locked our root-crops in the icy sod And all our summer sowing had been lost. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LOOKING EAST IN THE WINTER by JOHN HOLLANDER WINTER DISTANCES by FANNY HOWE WINTER FORECAST by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN AT WINTER'S EDGE by JUDY JORDAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 34 by JAMES JOYCE IMPULSE by DOROTHY MOORE GARRISON |
