HIS VALENTINE, by
First Line: A cupid, on a fat, red-paper heart
Last Line: "from jack, age nine -- I love you, mother dear."
Subject(s): Holidays; Mothers & Sons; Valentine's Day

A cupid, on a fat, red-paper heart,
He holds behind him, as he calls, "Surprise!" --
While joy is fairly beaming from his eyes ...
"I made it for you, Mumsy dear, in 'Art'!"
The page within holds drawings -- clumsy things --
But which he proudly, patiently explains
Are "zeppelins an' clippers," "streamline trains,"
Or "airoplanes," with wobbly, slanted wings.

My hug and kiss, my "Thank you," and my smile
Reward him, fully, for his "Valentine" ...
He must not know, this bright-eyed boy of mine,
The fears that come! ... I (who must reconcile
My heart to time's swift feet) blot with a tear:
"From Jack, age nine -- I love you, Mother Dear."
