HIS VALENTINE, by BLANCHE DEGOOD LOFTON First Line: A cupid, on a fat, red-paper heart Last Line: "from jack, age nine -- I love you, mother dear." Subject(s): Holidays; Mothers & Sons; Valentine's Day | ||||||||
A cupid, on a fat, red-paper heart, He holds behind him, as he calls, "Surprise!" -- While joy is fairly beaming from his eyes ... "I made it for you, Mumsy dear, in 'Art'!" The page within holds drawings -- clumsy things -- But which he proudly, patiently explains Are "zeppelins an' clippers," "streamline trains," Or "airoplanes," with wobbly, slanted wings. My hug and kiss, my "Thank you," and my smile Reward him, fully, for his "Valentine" ... He must not know, this bright-eyed boy of mine, The fears that come! ... I (who must reconcile My heart to time's swift feet) blot with a tear: "From Jack, age nine -- I love you, Mother Dear." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SCRAP IRON FOR THE YEN MARU by BLANCHE DEGOOD LOFTON SKYLINE TRAILS by BLANCHE DEGOOD LOFTON KEEP A-PLUGGING AWAY by PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR THE SLAVE SINGING AT MIDNIGHT by HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW PEARLS OF THE FAITH: 98.
