SKYLINE TRAILS, by BLANCHE DEGOOD LOFTON First Line: Smooth grey macadam, or sunshiny rail Last Line: I go, to the summons of skyline trails. Subject(s): Sea; Ocean | ||||||||
Smooth grey macadam, or sunshiny rail, Black-funneled ship, or a gleaming white sail -- Ribbon of highway, or moon-path of sea -- None of these ways will be tempting of me. Mine is a wanderlust, harder to cure -- Old as mankind, and as certain its lure -- Spring-time or Autumn, the charm never fails: I go, to the beckon of skyline trails! Sturdy of boots, but a shoulder-light pack, Up, then, and over the Mountain's broad back! Deep-needled pathway, and pungence of pine, Furry, light foot-prints, companioning mine. Timberline-hemlock, or vine-maple glade, Tall firs, that whisper ... and I, unafraid, Thrill to the scents and the sounds of the wild! -- Kin to the forest -- the hill-country's child. Up, and away with the dawning, I walk, Singing to chatter of forest-folk talk ... Noon-day, and silence -- that infinite hush!" ... Night, and the sweet hermit-call of the thrush. Night, and a finger of smoke from my fire, Pointing as true as the Mountain's white spire ... Sleep, and its benison, never once fails! -- I go, to the summons of skyline trails. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HALL OF OCEAN LIFE by JOHN HOLLANDER JULY FOURTH BY THE OCEAN by ROBINSON JEFFERS BOATS IN A FOG by ROBINSON JEFFERS CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE FIGUREHEAD by LEONIE ADAMS CHINOOK SQUAW by BLANCHE DEGOOD LOFTON |
