IMMORTALITY, by ALBERT W. MAYER First Line: Life is not the breath we breathe Last Line: Death alone was born to die. Subject(s): Immortality | ||||||||
Life is not the breath we breathe, Truth and beauty do not cease, Flesh alone subsists on bread, By the spirit soul is fed. Death seeks to take what cannot die And tries to prove all life a lie. The weak, the faithless, fear its call, The strong foresee the coming fall. The grave is but a place of rest For all the griefs and ills of flesh. So do not ponder and do not sigh -- Death alone was born to die. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WALLACE STEVENS' LETTERS by ROBERT BLY DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING by DAVID IGNATOW I CLOSE MY EYES by DAVID IGNATOW IN 'DESIGNING A CLOAK TO CLOAK HIS DESIGNS' YOU WRESTED FROM OBLIVION by MARIANNE MOORE THE THINGS THAT DIE by GREGORY ORR THE MAN WHO DIED TWICE by EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON YOUTH'S IMMORTALITY by GEORGE SANTAYANA |
