CHRIST IN BONDS, by LAURANCE J. NICOLSON First Line: He came, and yet his own receiv'd him not!' Last Line: "christ jesus reigns!" Alternate Author Name(s): Bard Of Thule Subject(s): Jesus Christ; Religion; Theology | ||||||||
"HE came, and yet His own receiv'd Him not!" We read in ancient lore; For Truth and Freedom's sake He chose His lot, And suffering bore. "The foxes have their holes, the birds of air Their nests, and yet," he said, "The Son of Man he hath not even where To lay his head!" Oh Truth! oh Freedom! is it gain, or loss, Ye count the Christmas morns? For love of you He bore the bloody cross, And crown of thorns. Behold! ten thousand temples rear'd on high, To Christ of Nazareth; And there the heirs of Freedom creed-bound lie, In living death! Oh Satire! greater never saw the light -- A people still in chains! Who cry from out the darkness of the night, "Christ Jesus reigns!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MYSTIC BOUNCE by TERRANCE HAYES MATHEMATICS CONSIDERED AS A VICE by ANTHONY HECHT UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE COMING OF THE PLAGUE by WELDON KEES A LITHUANIAN ELEGY by ROBERT KELLY NELLIE by LAURANCE J.
