HE left his home with failing hope and breath, To fight it out with death; Death whisper'd, as he look'd within his eyes, "A noble prize." Where'er he went no land could give him life For such unequal strife; At last, his one hope left -- Death pressing nigh -- Home! home to die! From morn till noon and night, from night till dawn, The good ship hasten'd on; And hasten'd on the shadow o'er the tide, Nor left his side. The happy earth-light faded in his eyes, And died, as daylight dies; The silent valley open'd unto him Its entrance dim. Adown the valley, grasping now Death's hand, He heard the cry of -- "Land!" And backward, upward to the light of day, He dragg'd his way. And they that loved him met him on the shore, And kiss'd him o'er and o'er; He whispered, smiling, as his spirit pass'd, "Home! home at last!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND CHRIST IN BONDS by LAURANCE J.
