ODE TO THE PELICAN, by MINNIE ELIZABETH OTTO First Line: The florida pelican / is a doleful old bird Last Line: On the mangrove limbs. Subject(s): Birds; Fish & Fishing; Pelicans | ||||||||
The Florida pelican Is a doleful old bird, He never seems to move Unless he's disturbed. He never flies high, His aim has been low. It's no fault of his, His wings were made so. He responds to kind treatment And knows his friends. But honesty his conscience Fails in the end. When the fish is pulled in At a glance he dives in. It's a question of skill Which fisherman will win. His only ambition is To fill his bill. He dives for his fish With questionable skill. At evening fall He spreads his wings And slumbers securely On the mangrove limbs. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE REASON FOR THE PELICAN by JOHN CIARDI THE FRIGATE PELICAN by MARIANNE MOORE THE PELICANS MY FATHER SEES by SISTER MARIS STELLA THREE WASH DRAWINGS: 1.
