TRAGOS, by FAITH EVELYN PACKARD First Line: The heart of man is cleft by two desires Last Line: Then vanishes and leaves all dark behind. Subject(s): Desire; Hearts; Life; Mankind; Human Race | ||||||||
The heart of man is cleft by two desires: The first, like music, lifts him to the clouds, With fleeting glimpses of a noble life. The other brings him down among the crowds Of greedy men where gold and lust and strife Have deafened many ears, closed many eyes, Till all the world is caught in tangling briars, And years pass on and still men are not wise. Apollo rides eternal, beaming high, Sending below his glorious, heavenly powers, That life may not be cold or earth be blind. But men praise not, till in the evening sky He dazzles by his splendor for an hour, Then vanishes and leaves all dark behind. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HOW MUCH EARTH by PHILIP LEVINE THE SHEEP IN THE RUINS by ARCHIBALD MACLEISH THE CONQUERORS by PHYLLIS MCGINLEY THE MARMOZET by HILAIRE BELLOC MEN, WOMEN, AND EARTH by ROBERT BLY BROTHERS: 3.
