REFRAIN, by ALICE PHELPS RIDER First Line: The night was dark and still and deeply young Last Line: Where tears had not been shed nor songs been sung. Subject(s): Night; Bedtime | ||||||||
The night was dark and still and deeply young; The stars hung near, so very closely near The world seemed but a pale, forgotten sphere Where tears had not been shed nor songs been sung. And into night, so void of seeming change, The years came, shy, with unobtrusive tread Until a radiance was gently shed That night might wake nor find that waking strange. And yet, that night was dark and deeply young; And stars shone near, so very, very near The world itself seemed some forgotten sphere Where tears had not been shed nor songs been sung. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE |
