A sonnet,fourteen lines of measured rhyme; The finely chiseled pattern of a thought That moves to quiet music for a time, Then bursts into a flower, passion-wrought; The throbbing sequence of a lover's tears; The soul's sublime intention, nobly sung; A winged breath that haunts the fading years: And dreams to which an aching heart has clung. A sonnet,rising from the hidden pool Of transmutation in the poet's mind, Revealing to the wise man or the fool The secret joys and sorrows of mankind.
