DIVINE INFORMALITY, by MADELINE SLADE First Line: Dear god, you seem so near, so close to me Last Line: Dear god, you seem so near, so close to me! Subject(s): Praise | ||||||||
Dear God, you seem so near, so close to me I find it hard to call you "Thee" and "Thou" As though the greatness of all your majesty Had placed you far beyond my reach somehow! I think you would be sad if everyone Exalted you and stood, in awe apart ... And I believe, when all is said and done, You'd give your throne for just one loving heart! At times you must grow very lonely, Lord, Though well-trained choirs sing your careful praise -- Lonely at man's perfunctoriness -- and bored Receiving pleas from sinners all your days. I am a sinner, too, and yet I pray For nothing, God, except to be your friend! I see no reason you should take away The woes that are my folly's dividend. It is enough for me to know you stand In readiness to give me strength in need, In willingness to take my silly hand And let me love you by my personal creed ... I know you'll understand if I discard The formal "Thou", the reverential "Thee" -- With you I find formality so hard, Dear God, you seem so near, so close to me! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...PRAISE PREMATURE by SAMUEL BISHOP ON GIFTS FOR GRACE by BERNADETTE MAYER AFTERTHOUGHTS OF DONNA ELVIRA by CAROLYN KIZER OUR DEATHLESS DEAD by EDWIN MARKHAM SIR JOHN CHIVERTON: DEDICATORY STANZAS. by WILLIAM HARRISON AINSWORTH A BOOK OF AIRS: SONG 12.
