DISILLUSION, by PHOEBE SMITH First Line: I thought your love would clothe me Last Line: Of my heart. Subject(s): Love - Loss Of | ||||||||
I thought your love would clothe me In an iridescent garment, That in shining golden sandals I should run across the sands. I thought your love would fill me With the melody of laughter, With the sweet and holy music Of a harp swung in the wind. But love has fled and left me In a tangled maze of thorn bush, Clad in faded, tattered garments Flapped grotesquely by the wind; It has taken all the joyousness Of music, and of laughter, It has left the raucous chorus Of wild crows, circling, mocking, It has left this wild, hoarse crying Of my heart. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ROSE AND MURRAY by CONRAD AIKEN THOUGH WE NO LONGER POSSESS IT by MARK JARMAN THE GLORY OF THE DAY WAS IN HER FACE by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON LOVE COME AND GONE by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON CHAMBER MUSIC: 28 by JAMES JOYCE CHAMBER MUSIC: 33 by JAMES JOYCE A SCOTCH SONG by JOANNA BAILLIE |
