SUBWAY by CLARA EXLINE BOCKOVEN

First Line: BROTHER!
Last Line: ARE NOTHING—LESS THAN NOTHING—TO EACH OTHER!
Subject(s): ENVY; RELATIONSHIPS; SOLITUDE; LONELINESS;

Brother!
(My weak tears blur your face—
Never seen before)
Here in the jostle and roar
Of a subway station's crowded space
I've glimpsed another
Guest of Hell.
That black thing on your sleeve
Reveals far less
Your loneliness
And for whom it is you grieve
Than your proud eyes tell.
My heart cried, "Brother!"
Because I, too,
Know how lonesome Hell can be.
Still, you at least can wait to die; but she,
My love, and I (I envy you!)
Are nothing—less than nothing—to each other!
