LIGHT AND DARKNESS (1) by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES

Poet Analysis

First Line: THE WORLD IS SLEEPING, AND THE EARTH IS DARK
Last Line: STROKE WITH HER TENDER HAND A BLINDED FACE.

The world is sleeping, and the earth is dark,
The lamps are out, the window lights are gone:
Was that a bird that twittered in its sleep,
Or was it but a fancy, here alone?

Who said the earth is dark -- the Moon has come
To silver many a tump and hollow place;
Dark Earth and Moonlight -- and I see a child
Stroke with her tender hand a blinded face.
